Bicycle Safety Is Often Ignored (Part B)
Requesting Safe Bike Paths
Unfortunately, Lizi Rahman, of Queens New York, is finding out the hard way that her legislators and council members don’t identify with her mission to make safe pathways for bicycles.
Ms. Rahman lost her son Asif in February 2008 to a bicycle accident. She has lobbied to the many agencies responsible for the safety of commuters (which include bicyclists) in her area and she is not giving up. Her next step is appealing to the mayor. She insists that the busy street her son’s bicycle accident occurred on deserves a bike lane no matter how difficult it may be to build and implement.
In another bicycle accident case, the city of Ormond Beach is trying to get the State of Florida to make Granada bridges bicycle lanes safer after a bicycle accident last year killed a 49-year-old woman as she rode her bicycle across the bridge with her husband.
Lucky for the citizens of Sacramento, California, their police department has a sting operation that watches for the safety of bicyclists and pedestrians. A sting in April 2009 at four corner intersections resulted in 26 citations issued.
What to Do After a Bicycle Accident
Like other victims in wrongful death cases or other bicycle accident cases, you could get involved in making your community safer for cyclists by working with your local legislators and/or council members. Urge them to make sure there are safe bike pathways for all cyclists to use.
