First Aid in Fireworks Accidents (Part A)

No one ever wants accidents to happen, let alone an accident where fireworks are involved. The reality is that fireworks accidents happen quite frequently; therefore prior to using them, one should really be prepared just in case an accident does happen.

A firework accident can ruin and completely change your life. If your child has been injured by fireworks in Boston or Andover you should contact an attorney to learn about your rights and determine liability. Massachusetts has a statute of limitations that may prohibit you from filing a law suit. Contact Kiley Law Group for guidance on your personal injury case.

What types of fireworks accidents occur?

The most common firework accident is a burn.

Other fireworks injuries include:

Fireworks First Aid

The following first aid activities can be administered on site; however, in many cases, the victim of the accident will want to seek professional medical attention for their injuries.

A critical component to being successful with home first aid is to have all the supplies on hand. Some families keep a well stocked first aid kit, others have the supplies but it isn’t in a formal “kit” and others purchase a pre-made first aid kit to have in their home for family emergencies.

Since the most common firework injury is a burn, you will want the following supplies readily available:

  • Gauze
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Ice
  • Water
  • Other first aid supplies

Burns

In a firework injury, a chemical burn is highly likely. Depending on the severity of the burn, you can treat the injury at home or you may need to seek professional medical attention.

Follow these steps:

  • Inspect the burn
  • If only reddened and not blistered, treat at home
  • If blistered, or charred, seek immediate medical attention

At-home treatment for minor burns:

  • Use an over-the-counter burn cream/ointment with loosely wrapped gauze bandages.
  • Monitor for infection.

Immediate treatment for severe burns (prior to being treated by a medical professional):

  • Do not wash the wound if chemicals may be present, a severe reaction can occur.
  • Place a dry gauze pad on the wound and secure it lightly with medical tape.
  • Keep the victim calm.
  • Make sure the victim stays hydrated.
  • Check for shock.
  • Get the victim to the hospital for treatment.
