Massachusetts School Safety: Are Our Schools Safe Enough? (Part B)
According to Boston.com, “A Marlborough student was suspended for bringing a knife to school. A week later, a Concord student was arrested for putting 10 classmates on a hit list. Then there was the bomb threat at a Tewksbury school and a lockdown in Waltham where two knives were found in students’ lockers, just a day after a pellet gun was discovered at another Waltham school.”
These reports seem to indicate that schools aren’t doing enough to ensure the safety and security of the students entrusted to them. However, these incidents were caught and the perpetrators are being dealt with within allowable laws and rules.
If Your Child is Injured At School
For someone who has been injured in a school violence incident, the actions may seem to come a little too late. Victims, although probably still scared, should become advocates for increased school safety and school security, urging their school to adopt a school safety plan or crisis management plan for when violent incidents do occur.
Recent school violence events:
- A New York school was involved in a violent incident on June 9, 2009 when a man broke in and fired several shots. Fortunately no one was injured.
- Ten die in a school shooting on a remote Minnesota reservation. The majority of the shootings took place at Red Lake High School.
- Five killed and sixteen wounded in a shooting at North Illinois University.
The stories could go on and on. Parents, teachers, children, and the community need to get active about ensuring school safety.
School violence is prevalent everywhere and it’s just a matter of time before something happens if preventative measures are not taken. For someone who has already been the victim of violence in schools, the time to take action is now.
