Child Pool Accident Statistics (Part B)
Not surprisingly, the vast majority of swimming pool accidents occur in the summer, when children are out of school and warm temperatures make swimming possible. Still, swimming pool accidents can occur any time of the year, especially if there is a pool where the child lives.
Even if a pool is covered, a child can fall underneath the cover or become entangled in the cover, causing a personal injury.
Who Is at Risk for a Swimming Pool Accident?
While all children are at risk for being injured in a pool or diving accident, those under the age of 4 are at the highest risk. Most children this young cannot swim and are unable to lift themselves up if they fall into a pool.
On average, boys are 4 times more likely to die in a pool accident than girls.
RevolutionHealth.com points out that minority children are at a higher risk of suffering injuries in a swimming pool accident than white children. According to their statistics, African-American children between the ages of 5 and 14 are 3.2 times more likely to drown in a swimming pool than white children in the same age group.
Massachusetts Pool Accident Statistics
According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, there were 74 deaths and 187 injuries related to swimming pool accidents in Massachusetts during 2005.
Massachusetts has seen a number of high-profile pool accidents, including the case of 1-year-old Jacob Ebenberg-Carey. The toddler drowned in his family’s swimming pool in Taunton when his mother didn’t realize that he had gone outside. As the Boston Globe reports, the pool had no protective cover or pool fence to prevent the toddler from falling into the water.
In 2005, a 3-year-old boy in Massachusetts was killed in a swimming pool accident when he fell into an above-ground pool. His twin brother survived the drowning accident. According to the Boston Globe, the toddlers were being supervised by their grandmother, who had gone inside for just a couple of seconds.
