Cruise Ship Accidents – When Passengers Go Missing at Sea (Part A)
When planning a vacation, cruise packages are often considered for their value and overall entertainment factor. The price includes many of the activities on board, meals, and you get to stop at various ports of call to see other sights. Of course when planning such a vacation, the thought that something could go wrong usually doesn’t even cross your mind.
Most of the time, there won’t be any worries on a cruise vacation trip; however, prior to booking a trip, a savvy traveler would want to know that there are times when cruise ship injuries and accidents occur. And in some very unfortunate incidents, passengers have disappeared from their cruise ship. Prior to booking with a certain cruise line, it wouldn’t hurt to ask them for their accident information in order to make an informed decision as to which cruise line to use.
A ship sickness, boating accident, or vehicle crash can change you or your child’s life. If you or someone you know has been injured contact an attorney to learn about your rights and determine liability.
Cruise Accident News Reports
In May 2009, Carnival Cruise Lines announced that a teenager from Hammond, Louisiana had fallen over the railings from their cruise ship. The incident occurred approximately 160 miles off the coast of Tampa, Florida. Although the cruise line and the Coast Guard conducted searches, the teen has not been found and is feared to be lost at sea.
ABC News reported on two recent “man overboard” stories. In one, a 36-year-old woman went over the balcony of the Norwegian Pearl cruise ship on Christmas night. In another reported cruise ship accident, a Carnival Sensation employee fell off the ship near the coast of Florida. Searches were unsuccessful.
ABC News also reports on a 21-year-old man from Canfield, Ohio who was sailing on the Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of Seas to the Bahamas, but he never made it. There is no evidence to show what happened as no clues have been found and searches on the ship and in the air have proved unsuccessful. This same ship line previously had another cruise passenger disappear from the ship while on his honeymoon in the Mediterranean.
