Cruise Ship Accidents – When Passengers Go Missing at Sea (Part B)

CBS and the Associated Press reported on a 24-year-old man who went missing from the Royal Caribbean near the Bahamas. The report also shares, “Passengers have survived falls from cruise ships before, including three in March alone. A 35-year-old man was pulled from the water about eight hours after he went over the side of a Carnival Cruise Lines ship off Florida’s coast on March 16. A few weeks later, a man and woman in their 20s went overboard from a Princess Cruises ship and were rescued about five hours later with no major injuries.”

Cruise Junkie provides detailed information relating to all sorts of cruise accidents. In their overboard page, they list that a 39-year-old man went overboard from the cruise ship Norwegian Sky in April 2009. Additionally, a 49-year-old man went missing after he and his wife fell from a cruise ship, but the wife was rescued. According to their information a total of nine people have gone overboard in 2009 so far.

Cruise Ship Accident Reporting

Cruise lines don’t report crimes or accidents to one central authority, so it is very difficult to know how many people actually go overboard each year. Although in the ABC News report, an informal statement asserts that 2008′s total of overboard cruise ship passengers was eight, which is a decrease from 20 in 2007 and 22 in 2006.

The bottom line is that it is possible to go overboard, although not very common. In order to save a person who has gone overboard, swift actions of the crew are necessary and may require the assistance of passengers who witnessed the incident.
