Tips on Protecting Yourself from Drunk Drivers

Were you injured in a drunk driving accident in Massachusetts due to someone else's negligence? Do you have a loved one that was killed by a drunk driver? If so, at one point or another you probably asked yourself, "Is there anything I could have done to prevent this?" or “What can I do to protect myself in the future from drunk drivers on the road?"

Police are trained to rapidly identify potential drunk drivers so they can stop and detain them to protect the public. You too, should be aware of common signs of drunk-driving so you can protect yourself and your family from these negligent drivers.

Dr. David Hanson is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the State University of New York at Potsdam. He has identified the following common drunk-driving behaviors and actions to take if you suspect a fellow motorist is drunk.

Common Signs of Drunk-Driving

  • Driving slower than 10mph below speed limit
  • Erratic braking
  • Driving into opposing or crossing traffic
  • Signaling that is inconsistent with driving actions
  • Slow response time
  • Straddling the center of the road, or weaving
  • Almost striking an object or other vehicle

Steps to Take If You Suspect Someone is Driving Drunk

  • Drive defensively – be prepared to take evasive measures to avoid a collision
  • Keep your distance from the driver, or pull over to let them pass
  • If the car is traveling at you head-on, pull over, honk your horn and flash your lights
  • Dial 911 or *SP on your cell phone. Tell the dispatcher you want to report a drunk driver and give them a description of the location and car you are reporting.

Ways You Can Protect Yourself from Drunk Drivers

  • Avoid traveling after midnight, especially on the weekends
  • Wear your seat belt, and choose vehicles with good safety ratings
  • Pay attention to the road by avoiding common driving distractions (food, makeup, cell phones, etc.)
  • Travel on four-lane roads rather than narrow rural roads, if possible
