5 Fans Injured During Selena Gomez's Visit to Emerald Square Mall
February 16, 2010 – North Attleboro, Mass. - Teen starlet Selena Gomez's recent visit to Emerald Square Mall in North Attleboro ended sadly when 5 of her fans were injured after falling off an escalator during her visit.
According to The Boston Globe, Gomez appeared at Emerald Square Mall at about 4 p.m. Saturday to meet with fans, some of whom were gathered on an escalator.
Shortly after Gomez, (star of Disney's Wizards of Waverly Place) appeared to the crowd, fans reportedly began rushing up the escalator and were caught off-balance when the escalator suddenly reversed. The quick backward movement threw some fans off the device, and 5 suffered personal injuries in the fall.
Those injured were transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital for the treatment of personal injuries. Those in charge of repairing the escalator said the device can malfunction and begin running backwards when too many people gather on it, calling into question whether adequate crowd control measures had been put into place to prevent such an occurrence.
Though initially it appears that overcrowding likely caused the accident at the North Attleboro mall, authorities continue to investigate the accident. The escalator, which is near Sears, was temporarily out of service while the injured fans were treated and technicians attempted to investigate the issue.
