Fertility Twins Have Birth Problems

According to the Boston Globe, recent studies show that twins who were created through multiple-birth reproduction assistance treatment (ART) are not only often premature, weigh less, are sicker, but they also required more hospitalizations up until age two or three than other twins who were conceived the natural way.

The Globe said researchers led by Michele Hansen at the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research in Western Australia of the University of Western Australia analyzed the records of 2,000 twins born between 1994 and 2000. The study was published in the journal Human Reproduction.

Assisted reproductive technology

According to the Globe, the study looked at assisted reproductive technology (ART) – in vitro fertilization, gamete intra-fallopian transfer, and intracytoplasmic sperm injection of eggs followed by in vitro fertilization. Twins who are the result of ART are not identical twins but have two separate placentas and they are usually a result of two or more embryos being implanted in the womb.

According to Medical Library, one in fifty twin pregnancies survives, compared to one in four of single births. They theorize that one out of eight conceptions started out as twins and that the number of twins has increased to over 100,000 a year. Out of the multiple births, 3,000 are sets of triplets. All of these births are considered high-risk pregnancies, according to the article. Many people are choosing to delay childbirth until later in life, and some of those parents choose ART as a means to guarantee that they will have a viable birth.

Twins conceived through ART

Esciencenews reports that twins conceived through ART had more than double twice the risk of death compared to other twins. The researchers feel that parents who want to undergo ART should be made aware of the results of this study so they understand that the babies may have to have medical treatment for the first three years of their lives.
