  • Use fireworks outdoor
  • Explain how hot sparklers are
  • Wear protective eye and ear gear
  • Only use fireworks as they are intended
  • Carefully inspect each firework before use
  • Obey all laws regarding the use of fireworks
  • Have a first aid kit or supplies readily available
  • Read all instructions and warnings prior to use
  • Purchase your fireworks from a reputable vendor
  • Have a designated shooting area away from spectators
  • Always point the fireworks away from people and homes
  • Keep fireworks away from flammable or hazardous materials
  • Anticipate and think ahead of what might happen — be prepared
  • Have a ready source of water nearby (i.e. – a hose or water bucket)
  • After you use fireworks, soak in a bucket with water prior to disposal
  • Always allow yourself enough time to move away from the firework once lit

If you or your loved one has been injured in a firework accident in Boston or Andover you should contact a personal injury attorney immediately to learn about your rights and determine liability. Massachusetts has a statute of limitations that may prohibit you from filing a lawsuit if too much time has passed. Contact Kiley Law Group for guidance on your child injury case.

The Don’ts of Fireworks Safety

  • Never give fireworks to small children
  • Don’t let anyone younger than 18 light fireworks
  • Don’t allow running or horseplay
  • Never re-light a dud firework; after waiting 20 minutes soak it in water
  • Don’t light more than one firework at a time
  • Don’t mix drinking alcohol or doing drugs with the handling of fireworks
  • Don’t make your own fireworks
  • Don’t use illegal fireworks
  • Don’t store fireworks where children or pets may access them.
  • Don’t throw fireworks
  • Don’t alter the fireworks in any way
  • Avoid lighting fireworks while you are holding them in your hand
  • Avoid bottle rockets (they cause severe eye injuries)
  • Avoid carrying fireworks in your pocket; the friction can set them off
  • Don’t have children pick up the pieces of fireworks after the event.

Sparklers – A Special Note on Child Safety

Remember that although sparklers seem harmless and are such a joy to children, they burn at 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit. This is extremely hot (hot enough to melt gold) and can cause a serious burn injury. Children who are allowed sparklers should be supervised and they should remain in a safe area.
