GM Recalls Vans Because of Risk of Engine Fire

General Motors announced in March 2010 that it will recall about 5,000 heavy-duty vans because of a risk of engine fires.

According to TopNews, the recalled GM vans were manufactured in February and March of 2010. The auto manufacturer also plans to immediately cease the production and sale of new vans until they determine the cause for the engine fires, which are believed to be related to a faulty alternator.

Vans Included in the GM Recall

The recalled GM van models include:

  • The GMC Savana 2500 and 3500
  • Chevy Express models 2500 and 3500

Most of the recalled vans were sold to companies that employ fleet drivers, as opposed to the typical consumer. At least 1,300 recalled vans were sold to fleet customers.

If you own one of the models affected by the new GM recall, you are advised to cease driving it at once. You are also advised to store the van away from other cars and buildings in case of fire, and the battery cables should also be disconnected.

In addition, approximately 1,400 AC Delco replacement alternators are included in a related recall. GM officials are working to determine if there is a connection between the recalled alternators and the faulty van engines.
