Prevention of Pedestrian Accidents in Massachusetts (Part B)
When it comes to pedestrian injuries from a motor vehicle, if a pedestrian is injured while in a marked crosswalk, the Massachusetts Pedestrian Law goes on to state,
“…the department of state police or the municipal police department with jurisdiction of the street, in consultation with department of state police if deemed appropriate, shall conduct an investigation into the cause of the injury and any violation of this section or other law or ordinance and shall issue the appropriate civil or criminal citation or file an application for the appropriate criminal complaint, if any…”
Community Activism
Massachusetts communities, and their citizens, can investigate what areas have an increased chance for pedestrian death or injury and take action to increase the safety within that area with:
- Increased police presence
- Improved lighting
- Overpass/underpass crossing areas
- Intensifying community awareness
Speed Limits to Prevent Pedestrian Fatalities
Another key component to the prevention of pedestrian accidents may be speed reductions for automobiles. Posting of speed limits and their and other law enforcement penalties can be a strong deterrent.
With solid community activism, including urging state government to get involved and do more, these efforts can hopefully reduce the instances of pedestrian and automobile accidents and deaths in Massachusetts.
