Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP) Recall Affects Dozens of Products
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently issued a food recall for products containing Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP) because of their discovery of Salmonella in one company’s supply of a commonly used processed food ingredient. Currently no illnesses have been reported because of the food contamination, but the FDA has issued an HVP recall for certain products that contain it.
What is HVP?
HVP is a substance used to enhance the flavor of processed foods, including soups, salad dressings, dips, frozen dinners, and various snack foods.
Which products are affected by the HVP recall?
The FDA’s website has posted a list of the products that are affected by the HVP recall. The food recall includes:
- Snack and mix products from brands such as Pringles, Quaker, National Pretzel Company, and more
- Soup, soup mix, and dip products from brands such as Publix, Kroger, De la Casa and more
- Frozen foods from brands such as Tornados, Posada, Jose Ole, and more
- Sauce and marinade mix products from brands French’s, Durkee, and Weber
What is Salmonella?
Salmonella is a group of bacteria that can cause bacterial food-borne illnesses, which have symptoms including:
- Fever
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
