Impaired Driving Simulators for Plaistow Students

The Eagle Tribune reported this week that Timberlane Regional High School in Plaistow, NH is helping students realize the very real dangers of drunk and distracted driving by presenting a driving simulator program at the school. The virtual program gives high school students the chance to see just how they would drive if they were drunk or distracted behind the wheel. Administrators at the school say that the students who have used the program have reported that it has been effective in getting the message across. Timberlane is the first school in the state to try out the federally funded Injury Prevention program's simulators, which include a steering wheel, a video monitor, and pedals for braking and accelerating.

When using the simulator, students can feel how it would be like to drive drunk or distracted, such as when using their cell phones. School officials report that this program really shows students how one bad decision can put their lives—and the lives of others—in serious danger. The simulator arrived just in time for the prom and graduation season. The program accurately demonstrates what the effects of drinking are and slows the reaction time of the student behind the virtual wheel. Students are also given a virtual sobriety test within the simulator program and, if they're arrested in the program, will be taken to jail and court. Administrators hope that this program gives students a reality check and makes them think twice before driving drunk or distracted.
