Infantino Recalls Slings Linked to Infant Deaths
Baby product manufacturer Infantino recalled 1 million SlingRider and Wendy Bellissimo baby slings on March 24, 2010 because of related infant deaths. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) ordered the recall after 3 children died, including a 3-month-old child in Cincinnati.
The recalled Infantino baby slings can suffocate a child when the loose fabric hangs over the child’s mouth and nose. This, in conjunction with the C-shaped curve of the body, which forces the chin down onto the chest, both blocks and restricts breathing. Because this baby sling hangs lower than normal, the parent cannot easily see into their child’s face to detect breathing problems before they cause suffocation.
Children of 4 months or older can hang in baby slings because the child is strong enough to sit upright. Infants should not be placed in loosely hanging bags. You should be able to look down and kiss your infant on the head. If you cannot do this, then the bag is too big or too loose.
If you purchased a recalled Infantino SlingRider or Wendy Bellissimo baby sling, contact Infantino at 1-866-860-1361 to order a replacement product.

Other Recent Baby Product Recalls
March 2010 was a busy month for recalled baby products, as Graco Children’s Products Incorporated recalled 1.2 million of their HarmonyTM High Chairs due to a fall hazard. The screws on the front of the unit that hold the legs can fall out and/or the plastic bracket on the rear two legs can crack, causing instability. The chair can easily tip over if one or both of these things occur.
The CPSC recommends immediate disuse of the product and suggests contacting Graco by Email or phone (877) 842-3206 to order a free repair kit.
