Interpreter Services Provided FREE at Franciscan Hospital
Franciscan Hospital for Children in Boston offers a very important FREE interpretation service. Franciscan Hospital wants to make sure that families have clear and accurate information when they are talking with physicians, residents, care providers, or staff about their children’s health issues. The Office of Linguistic and Cultural Services makes sure this communication takes place at no charge for people who speak limited English or need to communicate with American Sign Language.
Parents and guardians can request an interpreter, free of charge, 24 hours a day, through this program either in person, or over the phone. The Program’s office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, but there are interpreters available over the phone at night and weekends. The phone number is 617-254-3800 ext. 4700, or you can call Franciscan Hospital and ask them to page an interpreter.
These interpreter services are very important in Boston today because of the many non-English speakers that have moved to Boston. Over 25% of Boston’s population is foreign born today, up from 20% in 1990, according to statistics kept by the City of Boston. The Trends 2000 report by the Boston Redevelopment Authority found that almost half of the foreign born residents (48.5%) entered the U.S. in the past 10 years; and they represent 12.5% of the residents of Boston. Almost half of those new residents came from Latin America, followed by Asia, Europe, and Africa. Today, one-third of Boston’s residents speak a language other than English, up from 25.6% in 1990; and over 16% do not speak English very well compared to 13% in 1990. Almost 14% of the residents speak Spanish, compared to less than 10% ten years ago; and over 6% speak an Asian language, up from a little more than 4% in 1990. About half of those who speak Spanish do not speak English very well; while about two-thirds of those who speak an Asian language do not speak English very well.
The interpreters at Franciscan hospital for Children are trained in medical terminology and interpreting skills, They also are committed to treating your child’s medical information as confidential. They can help interpret medical appointments, interactions with medical staff, and they can explain about Franciscan Hospital policies and procedures, as well as health care issues in the U.S.
