In addition to car accident fatalities, we have also located some relevant information pertaining to fatal motorcycle crashes and pedestrian accidents, as well as accidents caused by drunk-driving in Massachusetts. It is our sincere hope that these numbers inspire everyone to drive a little safer and to give those who have lost a loved one to a tragic car accident the knowledge that they are not alone in their struggles.

2009 Fatal Car Accident Statistics and Projections

According to early NHSTA projections, 16,626 people have died nationwide in car accidents in the first half of 2009. This is a 7% decline from the same time period in 2008, which resulted in 17,871 car accident fatalities. These early figures are taking into account car accident reporting between January and June 2009, including data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).

While these numbers are not complete and subject to change before FARS released their final 2009 data sometime next year, they do give us an idea about where we are headed.

Massachusetts Car Accident Fatalities 2008

37,261 people died in fatal car accidents nationwide in the year 2008 according to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), the main source of car accident fatality reporting in the United States. Of those lives lost, 363 car accident fatalities occurred in Massachusetts. While these numbers reflect a substantial 16% decrease in fatal accidents from the 434 Massachusetts fatalities recorded in 2007, we clearly still have a long way to go.

2008 Massachusetts Traffic Fatalities by Number:

  • 42 motorcycle fatalities (majority of fatalities age 50-59)
  • 75 pedestrian fatalities
  • 164 alcohol-related fatalities (this includes both cars and motorcycles)
  • 20 fatalities involving a large trucks

The majority of fatal Massachusetts car accidents took place in Middlesex and Worcester Counties between 2006 and 2008; however, when that data is broken down into percentages based on the population of that county, Berkshire and Franklin counties had the highest fatal car crash percentages for the year of 2008.
