Adolescents, young adults, and the elderly are at the greatest risk for traumatic brain injury. Non-traumatic brain injury can be caused by strokes, brain tumors, pediatric AIDS, meningitis, infection, substance abuse, neurological disease, or other illnesses and diseases.

Brain injuries can result in:

  • the ability to function at school and home
  • include memory loss
  • organizational difficulties
  • speech and communication problems
  • difficulty in reasoning and problem-solving
  • a decline in social skills
  • impairments in vision, hearing, coordination, balance, or muscle tone

The Brain Injury Association website urges parents to protect their children from brain injuries by:

  • teaching them street safety at an early age
  • wearing properly fitted helmets when riding bikes, scooters, skateboards, rollerblading, hockey, soccer, and other impact sports
  • teach their children to only ride on designated bike trails and not busy streets
  • children under age 12 should ride in the back seat of cars and wear seatbelts
  • babies should always travel in car seats
