Massachusetts School Safety and Violence Statistics (Part A)
Just as the nation is experiencing an increase in violence in schools, so is Massachusetts. Not all of the school violence is deadly; however, all violence in schools is detrimental to the learning of the students.
Parents and administrators should be aware of these statistics, especially when developing a school safety plan.
Violence in Schools Statistics from the Department of Justice
- The victimization rate of students age 12 to 18 at school was 55 victimizations per 1,000 students in 2004 and 57 victimizations in 2005.
- Data from the National Crime Victimization Survey show that students age 12 to 18 were victims of about 1.5 million nonfatal crimes (theft plus violent crime) while they were at school and about 1.2 million nonfatal crimes while they were away from school in 2005.
- In 2005, some 8% of students reported being threatened or injured with a weapon, such as a gun, knife, or club, on school property.
