Massachusetts School Safety and Violence Statistics (Part B)
These are some startling nationwide statistics regarding school safety and violence, but is Massachusetts keeping up the national trend:
Violence in suburban and rural middle schools in 2005-06:
- 4,750 reports of violence (fights, robbery, sexual assault, threats of violence)
- 484 drug, alcohol, and tobacco offenses
- 290 sexual harassment cases
- 383 weapons found
Those figures are just for middle schools; yet the problem exists at the high school level as well. Even if one were to duplicate the figures from middle school, the statistics are alarming.
If you consider the sexual assault figure, it appears that almost one sexual assault occurs per school day. Additionally, these statistics indicate that on average, more than one weapon is found per school day. Simply unacceptable!
The Boston Globe provides the following additional statistics on Massachusetts School Violence:
- Between the years of 2003-4 and 2005-6, violence or the threat of violence in middle schools increased by 3.4% despite a 3.9% decline in the school population.
- Weapons confiscations (including knives and guns) increased by 13%.
- Sexual harassment reports increases during that same time period by 28%.
- In 2005-2006, 53% of episodes involving violence or threats of violence occurred in middle schools while high schools only say 47%.
- Nationally, violence in middle schools is on the rise.
Overall, violence in schools is increasing and more needs to be done to ensure school safety and security. Many agree that prevention is the key and that involves the actions of not only the students and administrators, but family, friends, and community members. It will take a village to solve the problem of violence in schools and each of us needs to get involved.
