Fatigued Public Transportation Drivers Put Public At Risk (Part B)
Public safety advocates say that the policies of the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) make it highly likely that driving fatigue accidents will occur on public transportation in our state.
16-Hour Work Days for MBTA Drivers
According to TheBostonChannel.com, the MBTA allows drivers of trains and trolleys to work 16-hour days, which can contribute to driver fatigue. Only eight other transportation systems in the United States allow their drivers to work such long days.
At least one driver admits to investigators that he has fallen asleep while driving a train, and time records show that several others work even longer than 16 hours at a time.
These types of practices may contribute to future MBTA driving fatigue accidents.
