Boston Truck Accident Causes (Part B)
Drunk Driving
Surprisingly, alcohol and drunk driving do not play a major role in most truck accidents. While there are certainly some truck accidents caused by drunk drivers, they make up a small percentage of the total number.
According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), only 5% of truck drivers killed in truck accidents had blood alcohol levels over the legal limit. In comparison, 33% of drivers killed in car accidents had alcohol in their system.
Age
According to the IIHS, the age of the truck driver can also play a role in truck accidents. Older truck drivers have more experience handling semi trucks and 18-wheelers. As a result, statistics show that truck drivers in their 20s are much more likely to be involved in a truck accident than older drivers.
Weight and Size
Many safety experts acknowledge that tractor trailers become increasingly dangerous the more they weigh.
According to StopBiggerTrucks.org, the current weight limit for trucks is 80,000 pounds, although some truck companies are requesting increases to 97,000 pounds. Their research shows that a truck weighing 100,000 pounds will take 25% longer to stop than a typical 80,000-pound truck. Trucks over 80,000 pounds are also more likely to be involved in truck accidents that result in rollover crashes.
