Red Cross Prepares Parents to Protect Children
The American Red Cross offers a variety of classes that can help prepare parents and childcare providers with the training they need to save children’s lives. And the instruction and course materials are also available in Spanish.
The training program includes:
- cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- first aid
- automated external defibrillator (AED) training
- injury prevention courses
- bloodborne pathogens training
- community disaster education
Facts about CPR:
- CPR can save lives.
- CPR doubles a person’s chance of survival from sudden cardiac arrest.
- 75% of all cardiac arrests happen at home.
- Cardiac arrest means the heart goes from a normal heartbeat to a quivering rhythm, and this can be fatal unless electric shock (defibrillator) is used while waiting for medical care.
- CPR helps keep oxygenated blood going to the brain and heart until the defibrillator shocks the heart back into a normal rhythm.
- If CPR is started within 4 minutes of collapse and defibrillation provided within 10 minutes a person has a 40% chance of survival.
Can CPR be used on children?
Although ventricular fibrillation is rare in children, CPR can help children and infants. Sometimes a child’s heart will have problems when they suffer from severe asthma. In those cases, CPR can help.
Red Cross courses teach parents:
- what signs to look for in appearance and behaviors of children that indicate an emergency
- what precautions to take while taking care of children with a disease
- what to do in case of an emergency–check-call-care
- what to do if your child is choking
- how to prioritize care in an emergency situation with more than one victim
- what to do if your child is not breathing
- how to care for cardiac emergencies
