Salami Products Recalled Due to Possible Salmonella Contamination

Daniele International, a Rhode Island food manufacturing company, has issued a food recall of approximately 115,000 pounds of its salami products after the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) confirmed its discovery of salmonella in one of the company’s unopened salami containers.

Testing is currently underway at a state health partner laboratory to determine the source of a multi-state salmonella outbreak. While it was first suspected that the outbreak was due to sausage products that contain black pepper on the outer surface, the company believes that crushed red pepper may be a source for the recent contamination. It is important to note however, that the investigation is ongoing and the cause of the outbreak has not yet been determined.
