Some health insurance isn't enough
Even people who have health insurance coverage are having problems with rising costs, to the point where it is causing some people to go bankrupt because they can’t pay their medical bills, according to a new article in The New York Times.
According to the Times, three quarters of people who had to file bankruptcy because of high medical bills had health care coverage; it just wasn’t enough. Federal legislators are working on finding a solution to the health care crisis.
Legislators are finding that some health insurance companies are selling policies that don’t cover a lot of medical expenses, called limited-benefit plans, according to the Times. When their policies can’t cover all of the medical expenses of major health problems, insured people can be inundated with high medical costs that they can never pay.
Underinsurance is the problem
Elizabeth Warren, a Harvard law professor who researched bankruptcies caused by medical bills, told the Times in the cases she studied many people were one diagnosis away from financial ruin.
The Children’s Defense Fund is collecting facts about the number of children who are uninsured, as well as those who are underinsured.
