Massachusetts Spinal Cord Injuries and Car Accidents

No one wants to be in a car accident. The hassle of dealing with a damaged vehicle can be very upsetting on its own, but if you have suffered car accident injuries, the pain and resulting medical bills are probably making your life even more difficult. If those injuries are spinal cord injuries, your life may be changed forever.

Spinal Injuries and Car Accidents

According to Milton S. Hershey Medical Center College of Medicine, more than 10,000 people incur spinal cord injuries in the United States every year. In addition, about 50% of these injuries are caused in car accidents.

Spinal cord injuries generally fall into 5 categories:

  • Concussion, resulting in damage to the tissue surrounding the spinal cord
  • Contusion, resulting in bleeding inside of the spinal cord
  • Compression, as a result of something putting pressure on the cord
  • Torn, resulting in damaged neurons
  • Transection, where the spinal cord is completely severed

Symptoms of spinal cord injuries can range from the relatively mild, which can be treated with over-the-counter pain medication, to severe or permanent conditions, such as paralysis.

Cervical Spinal Cord Injuries

You have 8 cervical or neck vertebrae. Vertebrae are the circular bones that surround the spinal cord. Cervical spinal cord injuries are the result of damage to the spinal cord and vertebrae in the neck.

Whiplash is one very common type of cervical spinal cord injury. The pain from whiplash, which can range from mild to severe, usually goes away within a few weeks. However, the pain may persist, or in some cases reoccur. In these cases, a whiplash injury can be debilitating.

Another possible result of cervical spinal cord injuries is quadriplegia. Quadriplegia, like other spinal cord injuries, can be complete or incomplete. If the injury is complete, the victim will be unable to feel or move anything below where the injury-in this case the neck-occurred. If the injury is incomplete, the victim may be able to move or feel some parts of their body.
