Swimming— A Safe and Fun Summer Activity
Swimming can be a safe and fun activity for children during the summer, as long as parents make sure a few safety rules are followed. The American Association of Pediatrics AAP News, Volume 30, Number 6, June 2009, wants parents and caregivers to know that children can drown in only an inch of water, so they should be very vigilant when children are near any body of water.
The National Institute of Health recommends that children take part in swimming lessons and this can help to keep them safe in the water, but is not a guarantee. Even people who know how to swim can sometimes drown. The AAP recommends that parents and caregivers always keep children under age five within arms reach when swimming.
AAP’s safe swimming tips:
- don’t leave a child alone in or near a pool
- parents and caregivers should have CPR training and supervise children at all times
- don’t use air-filled swimming devices to substitute for life jackets
- don’t allow children to use inflatable toys to float on in the water
- always make sure an adult knows the depth of the water before allowing children to dive
- don’t let children dive through tubes or toys
- don’t let children dive into above-the-ground pools that are not deep enough for diving
