Tips to Avoid Drunk Driving Accidents Over the Holidays
During the holidays, there are parties, social events and family gatherings where alcohol is often served. As more people celebrate the holidays by drinking, the risk of drunk driving accidents increases.
NHTSA Statistics
According to research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly four fatalities out of 10 involve alcohol-related accidents in the last two weeks of December. It has even been estimated that more than 1,000 people die during the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year's in drunk driving crashes.
The NHTSA study examined crashes between 2002 and 2006. It found that 21-24 year old drivers were involved in more fatal drunk driving accidents than any other age group. "Drunk driving is one of the most serious, and preventable, dangers we face on our roadways," NHTSA Acting Administrator David Kelly said. "Sadly, the death toll from drunk-driving crashes is higher between Christmas and New Year's than any other time."
Drinking During the Holidays
There will be a national crackdown against drunk driving that includes thousands of law enforcement agencies around the United States and is expected to run through the New Year's holiday. A public awareness campaign regarding drunk driving has been created and will air on television and radio.
If you plan on traveling over the holidays, there are ways you can take to minimize your risk of being involved in a drunk driving crash. Here are some easy tips to keep you and your family safe:
- Designate a driver if you plan on drinking at a holiday gathering.
- If you are hosting a party, make sure to establish rules regarding drinking and driving. You should have a plan in case someone drinks too much and can't drive. For example, have a spare room where he or she can sleep or offer to call a taxi.
- Try not to drive during the early morning and late evening hours on Christmas and New Year's.
- Always wear your seatbelt while riding or traveling in a car and make sure the other passengers do as well.
An accident caused by a drunk driver can result in serious injures that are often life changing.
