Over 1 Million Toyotas Recalled for Product Defect
Toyota has announced a voluntary recall of over 130,000 small cars because there is a danger that the vehicles may catch fire. Recalled Toyota vehicles involved include 2006 and 2007 Yaris which is available in a small two door hatch back or a small four door sedan.
Why is the Yaris being recalled?
The product defect involves pretensioners which tighten seatbelts and lock to keep you in your seat in the event of an accident. These pretensioners are activated by a charge which creates a vapor which can be hot. This hot vapor can cause insulation and padding in the B Pillar to catch on fire. Once a vehicle catches on fire, it can spread very rapidly and cause serious life threatening injuries including burns.
Has anyone been burned as a result of this automobile defect?
Toyota is reporting that there have not been any reports of personal injuries to date.
