Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are caused by a sudden and often violent movement of the head where the brain comes in contact with the skull resulting in damage to the brain.
That injury can be mild, moderate or severe depending on the damage to the brain.
Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
In the case of mild TBI, a person may not even loose consciousness.
The symptoms of mild TBI may include:
- headache,
- confusion,
- lightheadedness,
- dizziness,
- blurred vision or tired eyes,
- ringing in the ears,
- bad taste in the mouth,
- fatigue or lethargy,
- change in sleep patterns,
- behavioral or mood changes, and
- trouble with memory, concentration, attention, or thinking.
Moderate and Severe TBI
Moderate and severe TBI victims may exhibit these same symptoms and also experience some of the following symptoms:
- headache that gets worse or does not go away,
- repeated vomiting or nausea,
- convulsions or seizures,
- an inability to awaken from sleep,
- dilation of one or both pupils of the eyes,
- slurred speech,
- weakness or numbness in the extremities,
- loss of coordination, and
- increased confusion, restlessness, or agitation.
Causes of Traumatic Brain Injury
TBI may result from any number of violent situations, motor vehicle accidents, slips or falls, motorcycle accidents, and in the case of TBI in small children Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) may be the cause.
Treatment of Traumatic Brain Injury
Approximately 50% of TBI cases will result in surgery to repair the damage to the brain itself or to reduce the swelling around the brain.
As with any serious injury the possibilities for disabilities exist. How severe those disabilities may be is dependent on the extent of the injury, the location of the injury and the age and general health of the victim.
