Burn Injuries Can Be Extremely Painful (Part A)
Many of us have suffered a burn injury here or there. Usually it is while we are cooking or using a wood stove, or perhaps even taking a bath. These burns are very common and usually classify as a first degree burn.
Another type of burn that many of us are familiar with is the sun burn. Sun burns can be really serious and anyone who has had a bad sun burn knows know painful they can be. Additionally, it is possible for a sun burn to be a third degree burn, which can be extremely painful.
Causes of Burn Injuries
Burn injuries can be caused by:
- Dry heat
- Wet heat – water can cause burns. Make sure your water heater is turned down to an acceptable level to prevent accidental water burns.
- Radiation – caused by radiation therapy for certain cancers and x-rays.
- Friction
- Heated objects
- Sun – sun burns are one of the most common burn types and they are completely preventable. Wear your sunscreen and monitor your time outside in the sun.
- Electricity
- Chemicals – acid or caustic chemical compounds.
- Thermal burns caused by hot liquids, steam, hot metals – be careful in the kitchen with hot liquids and the steam that comes from cooking.
- House fires – install your smoke detectors.
- Vehicle accidents
- Kitchen accidents
- Cold – these occur when the skin comes in contact with a low temperature item, such as dry ice, liquid nitrogen or helium, etc.
First Degree Burns
This type of burn is the least painful; however, victims can still experience pain. Usually this will be a slight pain at the burn site.
