What is Whiplash?

Whiplash is a common, non-medical term that refers to neck pain as the result of an injury to the soft tissue (including tendons, muscles, and ligaments) in your neck.

Causes of Whiplash Injuries

Whiplash usually occurs when an external force or motion is applied to the neck, causing the neck’s soft tissues to move beyond their normal range of motion.

The most common cause of whiplash is motor vehicle accidents, followed by sports injuries, falls, and assaults.

It’s important to remember that even a minor Massachusetts car accident that does not result in extensive damage to your vehicle is capable of causing whiplash, even if you are wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Symptoms of Whiplash

The symptoms of whiplash may appear immediately after the injury has taken place or several hours after the accident. If these whiplash symptoms appear immediately after the accident, this may indicate an increased chance of serious damage to your neck and medical attention should be sought right away:

  • Neck pains
  • Swelling in the neck
  • Tenderness along the back of your neck
  • Muscle spasms on the back or side of your neck
  • Difficulty moving your neck
  • Headache
  • Shooting pains from your neck into your shoulders or arms

It is always important to seek medical treatment after a Massachusetts car accident, especially if you think you may have experienced whiplash.

In addition to the symptoms listed above, you should immediately seek medical treatment if you experience:

  • Shoulder pain
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness, tingling, or loss of function in your the arms or legs
