YouTube Can Help You Repair Your Bike

By Kiley Law Group, LLC on April 6, 2010

If you own a motorcycle, you will need to repair it at some point and be familiar with its maintenance requirements.

For most of us non-mechanics, this means a trip to your local dealer or motorcycle mechanic. This is usually a pain because most motorcycle repairs or maintenance requires the bike to be out of commission and can get expensive.

Repairs and maintenance take time and that is something that cannot be avoided. However, thrifty bikers may be able to save a bit of money be doing some motorcycle maintenance and repairs at home.

Doing it yourself (DIY) when it comes to motorcycle repair can be tough and dangerous. Often, motorcycle repairs require special skills and special tools. If a repair is done wrong, the results can be disastrous for the unlucky rider involved in a crash. DIY mechanics need the guidance of experienced mechanics to show them step by step how to do the job right.

In lieu of having a motorcycle mechanic mentor, YouTube may be able to help with your training.

YouTube has an amazing array of video on how to repair nearly everything on a motorcycle. These repairs cover everything from changing a tire to changing a motor. The videos cover vintage bikes, race bikes, cruisers, Harley Davidson motorcycles, and exotic bikes.

Most of the videos are very easy to follow and the hosts give clear instructions from beginning to end. What’s best is that they are actually doing the repair as they narrate. Of course, if you get lost or fall behind, you can always stop the video and rewind or replay it.

Here’s a word of caution. Regular guys often do the repairs and a “real mechanic” has not authenticated their tutorials. Sometimes the narrator states his/her credentials but most of the time, they do not. Before following any YouTube DIY video, make sure to do as much due diligence as possible to make sure you will do the repair correctly. Refer to your motorcycle owner manual or a credible repair manual as a back up.
