2 Teens Arrested After Murder of Elderly Roxbury Store Clerk
February 25, 2010 – Roxbury, Mass. – Two teenagers were arrested Wednesday in connection with the death of a 71-year-old store clerk who was fatally shot Sunday while working at a Roxbury convenience store.
According to The Boston Herald Martin Freeles, 17, and Onyx White, 16, have been charged with shooting Geraldo Serrano during a robbery at Hermanos Unidos. Serrano’s family will hopefully find some small comfort in knowing that police have identified suspects in this wrongful death.
Witness reports helped lead to the arrests and police found 2 firearms that are likely related to the shooting. The teens have been charged with several firearm violations, as well as armed robbery while masked.
It is believed that Hermanos Unidos’ lack of security equipment may have helped make it a target for robbery. The mayor of Boston has promised to try to help smaller stores acquire security equipment in the hopes that such tragedies can be avoided in the future.
According to Serrano’s family, the elderly man had been at the store for more than 30 years, and was known for giving candy to children who could not afford it.
