At Least 500,000 Cribs Recalled After Infant Suffocation Deaths
March 10, 2010 – Washington, D.C.- Parents and guardians are being warned of dangerous cribs that are being recalled because of risk of serious injury or even death.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), all Generation 2 Worldwide and “ChildESIGNS” cribs that feature a drop side are included in the product recall. Reports indicate that infants sleeping in these cribs are in danger of being killed due to strangulation or suffocation. The CPSC has stressed that there is no fix for this product and consumers should immediately discontinue use.
The CPSC said that 3 infants have died in their cribs after becoming trapped and subsequently suffocating. The issue lies with the drop side becoming detached after the plastic hardware breaks. When this occurs, an infant can easily roll into the space, causing suffocation or strangulation.
More than 20 incidents have been reported regarding the recalled cribs, with child injuries ranging from bruises and to broken bones. So far, 5 infants have fallen out of recalled cribs, meaning the potential for injury goes beyond suffocation.
Generation 2 has been out of business since 2005, which limits the amount of information the CPSC has about the company or model numbers included in the recall. This recall includes ALL models of Generation 2 Worldwide and ChildESIGNS drop side cribs.
The recalled cribs (priced between $60 and $160) were sold at various retailers, including Kmart and Walmart. If you believe you have an affected crib, you are urged to return it to the store where you purchased it. Depending on the store policy, you may receive a replacement, refund or store credit.
