California Man Experiences Unexpected Acceleration in Toyota Prius
March 11, 2010 – Boston, Mass. – Toyota’s unexpected acceleration issue continues to be a problem for car owners around the country. A frightening and potentially deadly occurrence on Monday has prompted increased efforts to investigate the issues surrounding the massive Toyota recall.
The Wall Street Times reports that a California driver had to call police when he was unable to stop his 2008 Toyota Prius while driving on Interstate 8 near San Diego. The Prius unintentionally accelerated to 90 mph and the driver, James Sikes, 61, was helpless to halt the vehicle, even as it sped out of control down the highway.
Sikes said that despite pressing the brake pedal as hard as possible, the Toyota would not slow down and several police officers were called in to help Sikes bring the Prius to a stop. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the ordeal.
Sikes’ Prius was towed afterward so that various officials, including those from the National Highway Traffic Administration and Toyota, could inspect the vehicle and investigate the incident. This particular Prius was included in the Toyota recall involving floor mats that tend to make the accelerator stick, but is not part of the product recall involving gas pedals that themselves get stuck.
According to Sikes, the floor mat was not the cause of the acceleration.
