Cape Cod Hospital Patient Death Ruled a Homicide
April 15, 2010 – Boston, Massachusetts - Last week the Cape Cod Times obtained documents that in 2009, a patient’s death at Cape Cod Hospital was caused by the misuse of restraints. Daniel J. Ryan, 35, was reportedly held down by several hospital workers, which resulted in his death.
Initially, the hospital reported that restraining Ryan was necessary because he posed as a threat to others. However, the investigation into his death found otherwise.
Now a state medical examiner has ruled that Daniel Ryan’s death at Cape Cod Hospital is a homicide. The family has reported that he was held down and unable to breathe for at least 7 minutes.
Ryan, a father of 2 young children, had been at the hospital to visit his wife October 9, 2009, when he became unruly. Security staff restrained him to the point where he lost consciousness. Twenty days later, Ryan died at the hospital.
