DA Talks About Shaken Baby Syndrome Initiative

Posted on Aug 05, 2008

In an interview with Middlesex District Attorney Gerard T. Leone Jr., he talked about the shaken baby syndrome initiative that he started at Winchester Hospital.  The District Attorney reiterated the importance of addressing the issue of child abuse, particularly shaken baby syndrome.

Leone said that with all of the tragedies that he deals with, shaken baby syndrome is purely preventable.  The shaken baby initiative came together around Winchester Hospital and Massachusetts Citizens for Children and the ability to put some money together.  Nurses have been trained to teach parents of children before they leave the hospital.  In essence, these parents are trained right after the child is born.  The goal of this initiative is to prevent these types of child abuses.  Leone is hoping that the program will grow into other areas of child abuse and domestic violence.

Before becoming District Attorney, Leone had prosecuted the highly publicized case involving British au pair Louise Woodward, in the death of baby Matthew Eappen.  He was the leading prosecutor on that case.
