Defective Toyota Accessories May Be To Blame For Crash
March 3, 2010 – Boston, Mass. – Toyota’s refusal to accept responsibility for the car accidents attributed to unintended acceleration issues has been the source of frustration for those who have suffered property damage, personal injuries or the loss of a loved one in such crashes.
According to Safety Research & Strategies, Inc. a man from Arkansas was driving his 2006 4-Runner with the cruise control engaged. As he approached a parking lot that he intended to enter, he turned off the cruise control and pressed his foot to the brake.
Though the 4-Runner began to slow at first, the driver said he heard the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) engage and then heard a click as the engine shifted into full-throttle. The victim’s car pitched forward until it hit a pole about 3 feet from the front of the vehicle, and would have kept going had the car not been stuck.
When the victim took the 4-Runner in for an inspection, Toyota specialists said they could find nothing wrong with the vehicle itself, nor were there any computer codes that indicated failure of any sort. It was noted that the driver had aftermarket pedal covers, which are believed to have contributed to the accident.
The suspect pedal covers were sold as a Toyota accessory by a dealership, which also installed them. Therefore, it would appear that the auto manufacturer may also need to look at the issue of whether Toyota accessories are safe for consumers to use.
