Mass. Drivers Benefit From Texting Ban for Truck and Bus Drivers
February 8, 2010 – Washington – Legislators attempting to focus on safety and awareness on the highway recently banned texting by truckers and bus drivers while on the road. This ban, unlike one proposed for all Massachusetts drivers, is nationwide and affects only those driving commercial trucks or buses.
According to Reuters, the texting ban comes after cell phone restrictions put into place in December for those who drive federal government vehicles. Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood stated that the ban goes into effect immediately, and is meant to reduce distractions for those driving trucks and buses. Because drivers of such vehicles are operating large, heavy equipment, it is stressed that they must focus on the roads and driving safely.
Those who text while driving take their eyes off the road much more frequently than those who do not, creating a dangerous situation for both themselves and other drivers. In fact, the National Safety Council has stated that texting causes about 200,000 car accidents per year. A violation of this texting ban will cost $2,750.
Some companies in the United States have already banned texting by employees who drive company vehicles. Some states have banned texting while driving for all drivers, and several other states, including Massachusetts, are considering a similar ban on driving and texting.
