Massachusetts Toy Company Fined For Selling Toys Containing Lead
February 5, 2010 – Rowley, Mass. - A Massachusetts toy company has been ordered to pay a $200,000 fine for importing toys that contained lead.
According to The Boston Globe, Schylling Associates, Inc., which is based in Rowley, Mass., imported and distributed 1000s of toys that contained lead paint. The toys were sold to numerous retail stores, even though their high levels of lead breached U.S. bans on the usage of lead paint.
In an effort to promote awareness of the dangers of certain materials, the Consumer Product Safety Commission publicly chastised the toy company. Some have said that Schylling should have known about the high levels of lead in the toys by 2002 and that it did not report the problem until 2007, when the company finally issued a toy recall.
The toys in question include spinning tops and tin pails that portray popular characters, such as Curious George, Winnie the Pooh, and Thomas and Friends. Sadly, many children were put at risk by being exposed to the lead paint.
