A new policy has been put into place that bans MBTA drivers from carrying cell phones. The policy got its first test on Monday, May 18, 2009, when a passenger on the T’s No. 1 bus on Massachusetts Avenue called the customer service center to report that the driver was using a cell phone. In less than 45 minutes the complaint was investigated when the T had a supervisor intercept the bus. It was determined that the T driver did not have a cell phone and had been talking on the dispatcher on an MBTA radio.
Even though it was a false alarm, it did show that the system worked. The tough policy was put into effect following a May 8 accident that injured approximately 50 passengers. The 24-year-old T driver, Aiden Carter Quinn, was fired after the T blamed him for causing the accident by text messaging.
The cell phone ban is being fought by the Carmen’s Union. However, the Department of Public Utilities, which oversees T safety, banned T drivers from using cell phones and other personal electronic devices while on duty.
Massachusetts Senator Michael Morrissey, (D-Quincy), is pushing for a $500 fine for bus, trolley, boat and other public vehicle operators who use cell phones while on duty.
