More Than 100 Tainted Food Products Included In Massive HVP Recall
March 17, 2010 – Washington, D.C. – A massive food recall has been ordered for products containing an artificial flavoring additive that has been linked to salmonella contamination.
The Money Times reports that in February, a customer noticed that a flavor-enhancer-hydrolyzed vegetable protein, or HVP-was tainted with salmonella, a bacteria that can cause painful stomach cramps, diarrhea and dehydration. The illness can be life-threatening in some cases.
Basic Food Flavors, the Las Vegas-based company that manufactured the tainted HVP, had evidently known about the salmonella contamination since the middle of January, but continued to sell the food additive to other food manufacturers who produce a wide array of popular products.
The food recall includes more than 100 food products flavored with HVP, including salads, snacks and snack mixes, flavored peanuts, potato chips, hot dogs, sauces, salad dressings and prepared foods. There has been no suitable explanation given as to why it took Basic Food Flavors so long to issue the recall on the contaminated HVP.
Among the foods included in the HVP recall list are two Pringle flavors, Windsor Foods’ beef taquitos and chicken quesadillas, and Quaker Baked Cheddar Snack mix.
So far, there have been no reported cases of customers getting sick as a result of the HVP recall, but consumers are advised to stay alert to the ever-growing list of recalled products.
