NHTSA Criticized for Not Acting Swiftly in Toyota Recall
March 15, 2010 – Washington, D.C. – Though many have criticized Toyota for its sluggish reaction to its unexpected acceleration issue, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is now being asked to share some of the blame for the problems associated with the massive Toyota recall.
According to The Washington Post, the NHTSA is being criticized for not being more aggressive about investigating early complaints about safety issues with Toyota cars. One troublesome aspect is that the NHTSA had been asked to review the unexpected acceleration issue at least 6 times in the last 10 years. Each time, the agency concluded that officials could find no reason to create a Toyota recall, or any cause for further investigation.
Some believe that perhaps many of the accidents caused by Toyota’s issues could have been prevented had the NHTSA simply pursued the matter. This means that personal injuries, property damage, and deaths may have been prevented, had the organization given more credence to early complaints.
Last week, the chief of the NHTSA testified before a House committee in regards to the massive auto recall. One of the proposals in question was whether the public could sue the NHTSA in order to force it to conduct a thorough investigation of an issue. It is unfortunate that the public would have to take such serious measures to insure their own safety.
