Patient at Cape Cod Hospital Died After Being Restrained
Posted on April 15, 2010
April 15, 2010 – Boston, Massachusetts - The Cape Cod Times obtained documents concerning a report on a man who died last year at Cape Cod Hospital after being restrained. According to the report, Daniel J. Ryan was held down by several hospital workers, which eventually resulted in his death.
Cape Cod Hospital has been cited for a federal violation of patient rights. Some of the findings include:
- The hospital staff was not properly trained with the use of restraint
- The hospital staff did not know the signs to look for indicating distress in a patient
- The incident was not properly reported
Although Cape Cod Hospital initially reported that restraining Daniel Ryan was necessary because he was a threat to others and was lashing out, the investigation has found otherwise. Sadly, the leading cause of wrongful death claims is due to medical malpractice. More than 225,000 people die every year from injuries sustained because of medical malpractice.
