Professor Challenges Stated Cause of Toyota's Unexpected Acceleration
March 9, 2010 – Boston, Mass. – A new wrinkle was recently added to the widely-publicized unintended acceleration issue related to the Toyota recall.
MassLive reports that a professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale has claimed that the problem actually lies with the manufacturer’s electronics system, and not the gas pedal as has been stated. On February 23, he brought these claims to Congress, stating that he could create the problem on his own by “manipulating” the electronics system in a Toyota vehicle.
The auto manufacturer insists that this is untrue, and duplicated the professor’s scenario with the help of Stanford University’s Center for Automotive Research. The goal was to show that the professor’s claims do not work in a realistic setting, and that they would produce the same result in other cars, regardless of manufacturer.
Toyota also hired a consulting firm to find out for sure if a faulty electronics system could cause the unexpected acceleration issue that has resulted in numerous serious car accidents and even deaths, as well as factoring significantly into the massive Toyota recall.
After the demonstration, the professor who made the claims mentioned that he would consider Toyota’s methods, compare them with his own notes, and draw a conclusion on the issue shortly.
