Rollover Accident in Andover, MA

A man was killed on the afternoon of Friday, July 10, 2009, after his vehicle rolled over on Route 93 South in Andover. The 23-year-old man was an Iraq war veteran who had lost his legs in a bomb blast.

According to Massachusetts State Police, Stephanie Ortiz, a 21-year-old Lawrence resident, was driving a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire coupe, when she lost control of the vehicle and went off the road near the River Road exit.

Mark R. Ecker II was a passenger in Ortiz’s vehicle and was ejected when the Pontiac rolled over in the accident. Ecker was transported to Lawrence General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Ecker, an East Longmeadow resident, had lost both of his legs below the knee following an incident where an improvised explosive device went off as he led a patrol through the streets of Ramadi in February 2007. The accident occurred during his second tour of Iraq, according to the Springfield Republican.
