Safety Improvements Needed for Big Dig Tunnels
April 27, 2010 - Boston, Massachusetts – Safety improvements are needed for Big Dig tunnels, according to a report from the federal Department of Transportation. The inspector general has urged the Federal Highway Administration to implement safety improvements in the following areas:
- In the Ted Williams Tunnel, ensure the safety of ceiling anchors
- Fire preparedness in the Dig tunnels
- Make sure calculations for the safety of concrete viaducts are correct
All of this comes in the wake of a fatality that occurred in July 2006, when a ceiling panel collapsed. Milena del Valle, 38, of Boston, was killed when several ceiling panels collapsed and crushed her vehicle. Since that accident, the state of Massachusetts has done a good job with safety improvements in the Big Dig, but there is still room for more.
The Big Dig project entailed a series of tunnels being built to replace the elevated central artery through Interstate 93 in Boston. In addition, a connection from Logan International Airport was made to the Massachusetts Turnpike, Interstate 90. This section of the road is known as the Ted Williams Tunnel.
