Saugus Pedestrian Accident Kills Woman

Posted on May 20, 2009

A high school student was allegedly drunk when he hit and killed a Saugus woman, following a school sponsored post-prom event.  The woman was walking her dog with her daughter at approximately 7:30 AM when she was hit by the high school senior.

Carol Marean, a 67-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.  Her daughter, 41-year-old Charlotte Marean, was taken to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital and later transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital, where she was listed in fair condition.

Jonathan Caruso, an 18-year-old Saugus resident, was arrested by police following the fatal Saugus pedestrian accident.  Caruso had attended a school sponsored post-prom harbor cruise in Boston and was taken by bus back to the high school at approximately 4:00 AM.  He had two other students in the car when he veered off the street, hit a street sign, a telephone pole, a bush and the two women.  The dog was not injured.

According to neighbors, the teenagers tried to leave the scene.  One of the neighbors who lives across the street told the teens that they couldn’t leave because she knew what they looked like.

The three teenagers were not injured in the accident.  Caruso was charged with negligent motor-vehicle homicide, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and transporting alcohol as a minor.
