School Bus Struck by Tractor Trailer in Massachusetts
A school bus carrying 46 children ages 6 to 13, was struck by a tractor trailer just before 9:00 AM on the morning of Friday, August 14, 2009. The Massachusetts accident took place on Winthrop Street, just west of Wilmarth Bridge Road.
The tractor trailer rammed into the back of the bus, after the bus stopped for another vehicle on the road.
Six of the children who had been on the bus were treated at the accident scene and taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital for their minor injuries. The rest of the children on the bus were uninjured and taken by another bus to the camp. Both drivers involved in the crash were not injured.
Richard Carrier Trucking from Skowhegan, Maine, owns the tractor trailer that crashed into the bus. At the time of the collision, it was transporting 95,000 pounds of mulch from a recycling plant in East Providence back to Maine.
Officers from Rehoboth and the Massachusetts State Police Commercial Enforcement Team are investigating the accident. Part of Route 44 was shut down for an hour until the scene could be cleared.
